2026 Toyota Tacoma Towing Capacity

A towing guide from Keeler Toyota of Westport

2026 Toyota Tacoma towing capacity: Start with your trailer.

The camper, boat or utility trailer you have in mind is a better starting point than the biggest number in a truck ad.

At Keeler Toyota of Westport, we can help you match a Tacoma configuration to the weights and equipment you’ll actually use. The people and gear coming along matter, too.

Three weights to keep separate.

Toyota lists a maximum towing capacity of 6,500 pounds for the 2026 Tacoma when properly equipped. The rating for a particular truck depends on its configuration. Use the applicable Toyota owner’s manual and the truck’s labels to work out its limits.

The trailer and truck must each remain within their applicable ratings.
The numberWhat it describesWhat to bring to the conversation
Loaded trailer weightThe trailer as you will tow it, including what you put in it.A scale weight with trip supplies aboard. An empty or ā€œdryā€ weight is only part of the picture.
Load carried by the truckPeople, cargo, added equipment and the trailer’s load on the hitch all affect the truck.Occupant and gear weights, hitch equipment details and a measured tongue weight.
Combined weightThe loaded truck and trailer together. The applicable gross combination weight rating, plus actual loaded weights.

A camper’s brochure weight may leave out water, supplies and gear you add before leaving Westport. For a boat, account for the trailer and its contents as well as the boat itself. A loaded scale measurement is much more useful than a guess based on the trailer’s length.

Payload is part of the towing conversation.

The truck carries more than the bags in its bed. Passengers, accessories, hitch equipment and trailer tongue weight also affect the load it carries.

Check the truck’s tire and loading information label for its occupant-and-cargo limit. The certification label and owner’s manual provide other necessary limits, including vehicle and axle ratings. A trailer below the advertised towing maximum can still create a setup that exceeds another rating.

More power does not settle the rating.

Tacoma’s i-FORCE and i-FORCE MAX powertrains give shoppers different choices. Do not transfer one version’s towing rating to another, or assume the hybrid has the highest rating because of its power output.

Cab, drivetrain, equipment and the exact configuration matter. Bring a stock number or VIN so we can review the truck you’re considering. If you’re also weighing a larger pickup, our Tacoma vs. Tundra comparison covers the broader choice.

Before you pick a truck

Put the load on paper.

Add the driver and passengers, cargo and added accessories, hitch hardware, and measured trailer tongue weight. Keep the trailer’s full loaded weight separate; this worksheet only organizes the listed loads carried by the truck.

Example: 400 lb of people + 150 lb of cargo and accessories + 60 lb of hitch hardware + 450 lb of tongue weight = 1,060 lb of listed load. These are illustrative numbers, not specifications for a Tacoma or trailer.

This addition does not establish a safe towing capacity. It does not check axle loads, vehicle or combined ratings, hitch limits, load distribution, trailer brakes or equipment compatibility. Have the complete setup reviewed against the truck, trailer and hitch instructions, and verify loaded weights.

A Fairfield County detail worth planning around.

For normal recreational towing, the Merritt is off the route. CTDOT prohibits trailers on the Merritt, Wilbur Cross and Milford Parkways. A familiar commute can be the wrong route when there’s a camper behind the truck.

Plan a permitted route to your destination before setting off from Westport, Fairfield or Norwalk. Check the current CTDOT parkway restrictions and the instructions for your setup.

A few more things worth knowing

How much can a 2026 Toyota Tacoma tow?

Toyota lists a maximum of 6,500 pounds for select, properly equipped 2026 Tacoma configurations. The actual rating depends on the truck. Check the applicable owner’s manual and vehicle information before selecting a trailer.

Can a Toyota Tacoma tow a camper?

Some truck-and-camper combinations may be suitable, but a camper’s name, length or dry weight cannot establish that. Check the loaded trailer weight, tongue weight, truck load, all applicable ratings and required equipment for the exact setup.

Does every Tacoma have the same towing capacity?

No. Configuration matters, including powertrain, cab, drivetrain and equipment. A maximum advertised for the lineup must not be treated as the rating of every individual truck.

Can I tow a trailer on the Merritt Parkway?

CTDOT prohibits trailers on the Merritt, Wilbur Cross and Milford Parkways. Plan a permitted route for recreational towing and check current CTDOT restrictions before your trip.
